The Cultural Curriculum Project, a 501c3 tax exempt organization, develops, coordinates, and funds meaningful and engaging public school field trips, grades 4 - 8, that connect students with art, culture, and history of South Louisiana. Culture bearers and community leaders are paid a living wage to share their expertise, traditions, and personal stories with the students; promoting cultural appreciation, preservation, a sustainable cultural economy and pride in our communities.
New Orleans native James Andrews earned the "Satchmo of the Ghetto" alias back in his Treme neighborhood and the name still sizzles in the city!!! He came up through a variety of brass bands (Treme Brass Band, New Birth Brass Band) before forming his own band, Crescent City AllStars. He has played with Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Danny Barker, Dr. John and Michelle Shocked. A protégé of soul man Allen Toussaint, Andrews has taken his place alongside legends swinging the New Orleans tradition in contemporary ways. He is determined to keep the flame of New Orleans Soul and R&B alive and burning in the hearts of many....
Carrie Hood grew up in New Orleans, attending public schools in Algiers, K-12. She received her BA and MBA at LSU. After a brief career in corporate finance, she joined the Peace Corps and eventually found her way to Sevilla, Spain where she worked on an international cultural event called Expo ’92. She came home to New Orleans in 1993, and began a 26-year career working for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Festival Productions, Inc., with jobs ranging from office operations to music production and management of the art and cultural presentations on the festival field. She has served on the Board of First Christian Church and volunteers her time teaching yoga at the Arabi location of Swan River Yoga and as a new member of NOLA Grannies.
Johnie DiBartalo grew up in New Orleans. He is a graduate of Walter S. Cohen Sr. High School and current Alumni Class President. He has enjoyed a long career as an Insurance Salesman and still resides in New Orleans with his wife of 50 years. He continues to volunteer as an instructor for financial literacy classes. Johnnie's personal history is an awesome opportunity to share with young people as he was one of the first blacks hired on Canal Street in the late 1960's.
Heather Canon lives with her family in Uptown New Orleans and has been a part of the tourism industry in New Orleans since 2000. As a mother of two school age children, she is excited about combining her interest in sustainable tourism with this public school cultural curriculum. Heather is currently an integral member of Dickie Brennan & Co. and volunteers as a Scout Leader in addition to her commitment to developing and growing! the Cultural Curriculum Project.
Chris Windon is a lifelong New Orleanian. He has worked in the New Orleans Public School System for over a decade, currently as the Director of Finance and Operations at Sophie B. Wright High School. Chris attended school and is
a dedicated father and community member.
